Quonset Hut in Snow Camp North Carolina

Quonset huts, first produced for use in World War I, were a popular low-cost building design the U.S. military used to house troops, supplies and equipment during World War II.  Up to 170,000 quonset huts were produced for use during World War II.  After 1945 many quonset huts no longer needed for wartime were sold to the public for various uses.  Building manufacturers also sold quonset hut kits.  Quonset huts are found throughout rural North Carolina, mostly used on farms, or as in this photograph, a tractor/automobile repair shop.
