A “Story and a Jump” House on Martha Jane Lane in Ocracoke North Carolina

A well-kept one and a half story house with cedar shake shingles near the Ocracoke Light Station.  Referred to as “story and a jump” houses, these central stair passage homes are the most prevalent of older housing styles on Ocracoke Island.  Most, like this home, have later additions behind the house, usually functional rooms that require water, bathrooms and kitchens.

  1. Glad to see our home. It was built in 1890’s at another location on the island then moved to Marth Jane Lane in 1930’s. Martha Jane lived in the home all her life. Our family purchased it 40 years ago. Tried to keep original set up but added a bathroom and running water in the 70’s. We are quite proud for receiving Ocracoke Preservation Award couple years ago for our efforts in maintaining it.
